Western Montana belt formations make up most of the geology of western Montana and northern Idaho. At over 1.4 billion years they are some of the oldest rocks on the North American continent. These belt formations are ancient sedimentary deposits that existed long before the mountain ranges they currently comprise. The fine grained argillite is a very hard by way of the forces of uplift that created the Northern Rockies.
